Sad, sorry, sorrow
Heart on the ground. Sorrow, distress, down-hearted. Grief
“Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever,” Chief Joseph surrender ending the Nez Perce War of 1877.
It grinds my heart. This is less strong as sorrow and is used as a polite expression of interest, equivalent to “what a pity.”
