Turtle, Fog, hazy

One of two signs for turtle.

One-handed sign for turtle

 Turtles in the Sky
(Fog)

The Cheyenne sign for fog.
Sign for turtle and then raise both hands in front of face.

This sign is described in the book “Sign Talk of the Cheyenne Indians and Other Cultures” by Ernest Thompson Seton.

The sign describes what happens to a clear pond of water. You can see clearly the fish and the bottom of the pond. Then the turtles resting on the banks get scared and scamper into the water, disturbing the muddy bottom causing the pond water to get cloudy. Sky turtles do the same to the clear air.

Some meetings I have attended were murky and the presentation’s meaning cloudy because of “flying turtles” in the room.
